From the
"Good Beer Guide" (CAMRA), "Beer, Bed and
Breakfast" (CAMRA), "The Good Pub Guide" - Alisdair
Aird and Egon Ronay's MLC Guide - "Pubs"
...
"The Royal
Oak is a truly rustic rural inn, set deep in the
folds of the Brendon Hills within the beautiful
Exmoor National Park". "No piped music, no fruit
machines, no posh fixtures and fittings have
intruded in the bars". "The several rooms have
flagstoned or cobbled floors, low beams, old
kitchen tables and hardly a pair of matching
chairs" and outside "a charming garden". "Besides
uncontrived charm, there are a couple of other good
reasons for a visit here. Firstly, the splendid
choice of well-kept real ales", and secondly "good
honest food" served in "a buoyant atmosphere". "An
extensive menu ranges widely, from sandwiches and
jacket potatoes", "good home-made soup with big
hunks of bread and non-packet butter" to
"substantial main dishes like beef and Beamish pie
with tender, lean meat in a rich gravy" "There's
always a vegetarian dish" and a children's menu.
Steaks and fish and a good many other sauced dishes
appear on the additional evening menu. There are
also "decent wines served by the glass and some
remarkable ones by the
bottle".

POLTIMORE
ARMS - YARDE DOWN - NR SIMONSBATH Telephone
01598 710381
On the edge
of Exmoor in what seems like the middle of nowhere,
electricity by generator, but good beer and the
best pub food you are likely to get. Run by a most
hospitable couple, Richard has created a great
atmosphere in the bar and offers a warm welcome to
all, Dawn looks after the kitchen and the food is
superb. Our favourite is salmon on a bed of
spinach, with a tomato and tarragon cream sauce
served with their speciality "herbie potatoes".
Average cost of a main is about
£7.00.

NOTLEY

Website
On the very edge of
the Brendon Hills and Exmoor, Monksilver boasts a population
of some 90 souls whose winter trade contributes largely to the
success of the Coach House skittle alley that graces the pub
car park. Wood-burning stoves, a collection of old plates and
local paintings, and simple furnishings lend a homely feel to
the large bar. The leaseholder - 'and occasional chef'! -
discusses and effects changes to the daily menu with each
session, ensuring the freshest available produce is used.
Lunch dishes of, perhaps, chicken and bacon pudding and filled
baguettes and pittas are supplemented at night by local trout
and steaks, pork with leeks, ginger and cream and fresh cod
with avocado salsa. Very much a locals' local, other
speciality dishes include fresh fish from Lyme Regis,
home-made pasta and good vegetarian options. Plenty of real
ales and well-chosen wines to accompany.
